Rowan Williams and Liberalism

James K. A. Smith has written a nice short piece against calling Rowan Williams a “liberal” because of his most recent controversy. Not only does he distill Williams’s opposition to liberalism to its kernel form, but he also makes clear that the issue with both liberals and conservatives is their readiness to conform their faith to the patterns laid down by the state.
